Bad cops, bad cops; what you gonna do when Dougy comes for you?

doug singh

Just this past Wednesday, a charge of robbery was withdrawn against Police Corporal Jermaine Mangar. Mangar is the only cop who was charged following the April First bombshell that a ring of rogue cops were wrecking havoc in the department.  But the Minister of Police, Doug Singh says there are plenty other officers on interdiction and that a decision has to be made about the rotten apples. Besides it costs the department too much to keep the accused cops on interdiction.

Doug Singh, Minister of Police

“There are about forty one cases against policemen who are on interdiction at this point in time.  For me these things have to be resolved.  Some of these people on interdictions have been there for maybe a year, year and a half, two years.  What it does, it costs the Government of Belize because they’re on fifty percent salary, if you have to return him you’re going to have to compensate them for the difference and during the process you benefit from these police officers being idle essentially because it’s not benefiting the Police Department.  Either we make a decision that these people are guilty or innocent and if we can take disciplinary charges despite the fact that you might not be able to convict them on any criminal charges that they may have done, then we will do so internally.  But we should not sit on these files.  The perception by the public is that there’s a different justice standard that you go after the guys out there, general public, but you don’t deal with your internal department the same way.  What we want to do is that that’s not what we’re about.  These forty-one files – I had asked the prosecutor for the Police, Mrs. Purcell, to actually look these things over.  The files she doesn’t have she must request and the investigations must be concluded on those and she will review them, evaluate them and determine which directions we go with them, but we intend to deal with those things.  The public will believe that all this is true if we do nothing about it so the effort is being made.”

Mr. Singh is saying all the right things here, and i applaud him for his bravery, and effort in trying to regain some trust back into the police department.
he is clearly going in the right direction for now, and we can should support this new change for now.

sacrifice the bad cops to save the rest, sounds like a solution to me.
