From Yes to I Do’s groom badly injured in traffic accident

julio escalante

Across the country and abroad, viewers have grown to love Julio Escalante, the groom-to-be of our From Yes to I do reality wedding show. The soft spoken and humble Julio was on his way to work today when he was hit by a vehicle. He was rushed in an unconscious state to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where a battery of tests were performed on him this afternoon.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports on the traffic mishap.

Local reality star Julio Escalante tonight lies in a critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after being knocked down this afternoon while returning to work at the Princess Casino after his lunch break.  Shortly after one o’clock today Escalante was riding along Central American Boulevard near its intersection with Iguana Street when a green Geo Tracker driven by Leonard Lewis knocked him off his bicycle.  Escalante reportedly fell under the moving vehicle and was dragged several feet.  Badly injured he was rushed to the KHMH in an unconscious state.

His nephew, Ryan Locke, accompanied him to the hospital.

“I was at my grandmother’s house and my neighbor came and told us that my uncle got knocked down and upon reaching the scene I saw my uncle lying on the ground, which blood coming from his face.  One guy stopped and helped us, he give us a hand by brought him into the hospital but according, an eyewitness came to us personal and told us that the driver of the vehicle was gazing and they were yelling at him to let him stop but maybe it was too late and he was already upon him which he hit him and he fell on his face and the vehicle continued which he run over him and dragged like three feet from which he was hit.”

Lewis, who spoke with News Five off record, said he suffered an epileptic fit behind the steering wheel of his vehicle.  He was en route to the University of Belize along with his family where his wife was to have registered for the upcoming semester.  Escalante’s clothing which was blood-soaked and tattered along with his knapsack and other personal effects were recovered from the scene of the incident.  His bride-to-be, Vanesa Ramos, isn’t buying the story of the driver having a seizure attack.

“If the man suffers from epilepsy he shouldn’t be driving and I too believe that he shouldn’t be driving.  And a while ago he came and apologized and to be honest I’m not accepting that apology because how can you knock down somebody and just come and say “I’m sorry”.

Ryan Locke

“As far as I’m concerned I don’t know which is I think it’s not true but a doctor would have to prove that for my family to believe so because my uncle is in a very bad condition.  We don’t know what will happen.”

Escalante, who has since regained consciousness, suffered a broken hip, a fractured jaw and a dislocated shoulder.  The couple which stars on Channel Five’s reality wedding show From Yes To I Do is scheduled to tie the knot before thousands on national live television on August twenty-first.

“Right now everybody is very concerned.  They’re all worried right now inside, very upset as well.”

Lewis’ vehicle has since been impounded at the Raccoon Street Police Station and it is uncertain at this time whether any charges will be brought against him. Reporting for News Five I am Isani Cayetano.

As we said, Julio is in critical condition and we are praying and hoping for a speedy recovery. And if you are wondering about the wedding, all we can say right now is for you to offer support to Vanesa and family through this difficult period.

  2. Maddyvandijk says:

people love to drive in belize as reckless as possible, that is a fact.

with a doctors conformation about this lewis health he should be charged for attempted murder, a person suffering from epilepsy should not be operating an auto, outside nor innside a residential area.

At least the man is not a cold hearted killer, he offered an apology for what he’s done.

  3. Mel says:

If this driver had an epileptic episode he should not have been driving . Persons with any medical condition that can incapacitate them when driving at any given time should not be driving period. Hope the guy recovers .

  4. Proud Belizean says:

Maybe its time that we enforce by law that all cyclists wear a helmet while riding. Also enforce strict laws such as those in the US: when a cyclist is in your lane, you must wait till the other lane is clear to overtake them.

Hopefully he recovers well for his wedding.

  5. Verleene says:

I offer my support and prayer for him to have a speedy recover. I also would like to say that most accidents that happen in Belize are hit and run. At least that man did not act like he did’nt do it. It takes a man to apologize for things like that. Again praying for the family.

  6. COUGAR says:

I agree with ya’ll that say ” if in fact this lewis guy had a seizure, he shouldn’t be driving, he shouldn’t eve have a valid drivers license for a motorcycle”

Proper screenign needs to be done by doctors who certify individuals capable of driving.

  7. Daniel says:

hmmm…LET ALL PRAY FOR JULIO…….He seems to be a very hard working person…..his family does still need him…..God please dont take him away….I think Lewis should get charged….
May God Bless JULIO and his family….

  8. Mac says:

I don’t know the entire story, however, if someone has a seizure, they go through a period of postictal state where they are in la la land, they can’t remember anythig of the incident much less stop a moving vehicle to render aid. At this stage, only a neurologist would be able to determine if he had a seizure.

I pray that Julio pulls through and i will keep him and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

    Nuff Love Bro
