Marlon Garnett not with team at Centro Basket in DR

Despite emerging victorious in its first match up, the roster is short of one of its top shooters who did not make it to DR because of an inadequate insurance policy.  Top shooter Marlon Garnett, who was spectacular in last year’s COCABA Championship in Cancun, is noticeably absent from the hardwood in Santo Domingo.  Garnett was in our studios this morning and discussed his absence from the games and his future in basketball on the international front.

“Can you begin by explaining to us in some detail what took place regarding the application for a comprehensive insurance policy that would have covered you in the Dominican Republic?”

Marlon Garnett

“I’ll go all the way back to a week before coming to Belize.  I was promised a few things but this being the most important thing, some form of insurance to cover me while I was playing with the national team for this two weeks.  I was told that it was already taken care of and that in a couple days they would email me the document so I can look it over and make sure it’s what I needed.  That email never came so I waited out, this was a week before flying and giving them the benefit of the doubt I still came to Belize thinking that once I arrived, you know, they would have the documents ready.  So over the course of the week, I think this was Monday, I’m asking them, you know, can I see the documents of whatever insurance that you guys are gonna provide for me.  They didn’t have any documents and come Thursday the day of the first practice game they emailed me something that, to make a long story short, was a simple like healthcare plan so I let them know that that wasn’t the coverage that I needed.  It was more of a disability, loss of income type of insurance that was needed.”

Isani Cayetano

“Would you mind going a bit more into detail with regards to let’s say the clauses or the specifics of that particular policy.”

Marlon Garnett

“Okay normally that kind of policy there would be an actual amount that’s covered.  So for example in the past, let’s say you wanna insure for three hundred thousand dollars which that may be the amount that you would make on your regular job, your regular team.  So to come here and play, a policy that covers three hundred thousand dollars over the course of a whole year, a ten to twelve month period, will cost six or seven thousand dollars.  So, that same policy for two weeks, I’m not sure if they even offer for two weeks but maybe for a month, would be substantially less expensive than that.”

Isani Cayetano

“We’re of the assumption that you’re not the only player who would have went to the Dominican Republic without this insurance policy in place.  Can you speak to us your knowledge of any other player who might be out there without that particular plan.”

Marlon Garnett

“I think the whole team now, from looking at the list of what they did provide the players are covered.  All the players that are there are covered with this health insurance policy or I don’t know the, what they, or travel insurance or whatever you wanna call it but not loss of income/disability insurance and, I mean there’s a few players on our team that would have a lot to lose, you know, Milton being one.  Milton played seven years in the NBA.  He still is playing overseas and at a higher level so I don’t know exactly what he makes but his contracts are of a substantial amount of money that he’s putting at risk by playing.  I’m not sure if he has some outside situation, maybe his agent already has him covered under some kind of policy but, I mean it’s a risk that he’s taking and I take my hat of to him to do that but just personally I feel like I can’t.”

Isani Cayetano

“What’s next for you? Where do you go from here?”

Marlon Garnett

“When I go, I have a flight today going back home to be with my family, continue to negotiate with my agent as to where I’ll be going next season.  It looks like maybe back to Iran.  I had a good year this past season and I enjoyed it.  It’s a nice contract, contract there but I’ll sit down with him and see what the best scenario is for me.”

Traitor. $$ before national pride. We don’t need that. Better losing with patriotic players than winning with mercenarie$.

He’s NOT a traitor. He’s intelligent. Who will cover him if he gets injured on the court? National pride doesn’t pay the bills. If we want to be the best then we as a country have to fit the bill. It is already a disgrace that they national team was formed 2 weeks before the tournament. It’s time for us to step up as a country and give our players the support they need.
