Belize National Basketball Team overpowers Venezuela

Good Evening, I’m James Addles and this is Sports Monday.

We take you immediately inside El Palacio de Deportes in the Dominican Republic where Centre Basket 2010 opened this morning with Belize facing Trinidad and Tobago.  We pick up the action in  the second quarter as Alex Carcamo raises up for the two pointer just outside the paint to to give Belize a 40-38 lead at the half. Coming out of intermission its Alex Carcamo opening again this time with the tough baseline jump to get Belize rolling. Milton Palacio then streaks in for the lay up for two more points. Trinidad and Tobago then get to the bank to score a two point bucket. And at the end of the third quarter Belize is up 63-54. Darwin Leslie makes his presence felt in the fourth quarter with this nice mode. But here comes the run by Trinidad and Tobago as the pass comes out to Ian Young who sinks the three. Steven Lewis then outruns Team Belize to hammer this dunk home. It is Lewis again with the tough high rise banker of the glass and when Young works his way down for the two points; Trinidad and Tobago finds itself down by three. The response comes from Alex Carcamo off this Milton Palacio dish that provides some breathing room for Team Belize. At the other end Steven Lewis comes up with this breakaway monster two hand jam. However, Richard Troyer comes up with this big time three to ease that pressure. Trinidad hangs tough with the three pointer from the corner by Akin Hughes-Joseph But with time running out Captain Milton Palacio takes charge forcing the opposition to foul on every possession. He would hit two out of four attempts as the National Basketball Team of Belize opens with an 80-71 victory against Trinidad and Tobago. Tomorrow at eleven am Belize takes on Mexico in Centro Basket and fans will remember Mexico beating Belize for the gold medal in COCABA play, last year august, in a ball game that might have been decided on questionable calls. Let’s just call this one La revanja.

Meanwhile, just in case you missed the game between Belize and Venezuela. Very easily Team Belize established a rhythm and it leads to quick as Alex Carcamo hits inside the paint. Team Captain Milton Palacio then plays on the Venezuelan defense to land this finger roll. In this trip down court, Palacio dishes to Leon Watson in his office and he says thank you with an exclamation. This time it’s Charlie Burgess who will dish and again Watson responds with the save. Of course Venezuela does respond as Francisco Centeno strip Richard Troyer to lay in two points. At the end of the 1st quarter Belize leads 27-9. In the second half Hunter Paulero picks off this rebound pass and goes all the way for two points. From the left corner, Darwin “puppy” Leslie hits the long jumper and gives Milt the assist. Leon Jacobs comes into the ballgame and makes his presence felt immediately with the layup at the other end Jesus Valencia helps Venezuela in the hunt with this three pointer.  Paulero comes right back for Belize with the triple. The traffic Hector Romero rises up for a two handed jam as Venezuela tries to make a run. At the half time, the lead is 40 to 26. Belize would maintain that dominance throughout the ballgame and took Game two against Venezuela in at a decisive 83 to 64 final score.
