Sr. Supt. Robert Mariano suspended for contraband rum

He is the Deputy Officer in Charge of Eastern Division and tonight there is word that Senior Superintendent Robert Mariano has been suspended without pay from active duty in the force. The senior superintendent has been named in an incident which occurred on November seventeenth when he was busted by the Customs Department for the illegal possession of a case of Jamaican Appleton rum he received from alleged Corozal contrabandist, Israel Rancharan. In a sting operation Rancharan was seen putting a case of the rum in Mariano’s Police vehicle in the Coney Drive Area. Shortly after, Mariano was stopped; the contraband liquor was found and confiscated. Custom officers also caught up with Rancharan who was found with three boxes of contraband cigarettes. What placed Mariano under further scrutiny was that he claimed not to know the contraband dealer. In a conflicting statement, however, Rancharan admitted to Customs that he did deliver the rum to Mariano.
