Body of missing man found in Guatemalan village

Story PictureThe family of a young man from Benque Viejo del Carmen who went missing last week got their worst fears confirmed when his father discovered his body over the weekend. On Saturday, Ricardo Chulin found the body of his son, twenty-one year old Nelson Chulin with machete wounds to his head and chest. His body was found lying face down in a remote village called Rondon, about an hour’s drive away from the Western border with Guatemala. The younger Chulin, a mechanic by profession, went missing on a shopping trip to Melchor where he had gone to purchase vehicle parts. When his family spoke to News Five last week, they said Nelson had only taken twenty dollars with him, but now they have confirmed that he had between two and three thousand dollars. Neither the money nor the parts were anywhere in sight. Inside his car, which was discovered in another remote area called Camalote, were Nelson’s passport, cell phone, and empty wallet. His family was first made aware of his disappearance when Guatemalan police used his phone to report that they had found his vehicle and personal items. They have since kept his vehicle to conduct further investigations. The family has also sought the assistance of the Guatemalan Minesterio Publico, which is the counterpart to Belize’s Ministry of Home Affairs, for additional assistance in the investigation. Nelson was buried in Succotz Village on Sunday.
