Vegetable supplier digs up more dirt in K.H.M.H. inquiry
Day seven of the Commission of Inquiry got underway this morning as scheduled before Commissioners Justice Adolph Lucas, Orvin Nicholas and Julia Castillo. There were some light moments as the first witness gave testimony. Julian Chell is a former vegetable supplier to the K.H.M.H. Chell said he offered the institution cheaper prices of between three and five hundred dollars worth of vegetables on a weekly basis for five years. He said that while he never received a complaint he found out that he was no longer the hospital’s vegetable provider in a less than courteous fashion.
Julian Chell, Vegetable Vendor
“I have a long list of vegetables I used to give them, for example I used to give them cocoa for a dollar a pound or one twenty-five, depending on the price. It used to fluctuate. Lettuce I used to give them for three dollars each, I used to give them tomatoes for a dollar a pound, two dollars, depends on the price, supply and demand.”
Justice Adolph Lucas, Chief Commissioner
“Why did you stop?”
Julian Chell
“One Monday morning, usually I call them and they would give me their orders. And that Monday morning I called them and somebody from the kitchen answered. Ih seh Mr. Chell you will no longer be delivering vegetables to Karl Heusner because one Mr. Perrera gave orders not to buy from you again. I said thank you.”
Justice Adolph Lucas
“Anybody had complained about the vegetables or the products that you supplied?”
Julian Chell
“No your honour because I always used to give them the best vegetables and fresh vegetables because I am at the market at one o’clock in the morning so that by eight o’clock I have their vegetables ready for them. If they are in an emergency I used to be there seven o’clock, seven-thirty, but the usual time I used to deliver it was nine o’clock, nine-thirty, every Tuesday morning.”
Justice Adolph Lucas
“You know Mr. Perrera who this person was referring to?”
Julian Chell
“I know him because he is a political guy in Orange Walk. He ran for the Orange Walk Town Board and I did not vote for him.”
Justice Adolph Lucas
“Do you know that he knew that you did not vote for him?”
Julian Chell
“Well he knows that I will not vote for him because I am a political guy in Orange Walk.”
