B.D.F. accident leaves 1 dead and 7 injured

Story PictureIn other tragic news, the B.D.F. lost one soldier and seven others were injured in a fatal accident in the Cayo District involving a heavy duty military vehicle. Shortly after eight Sunday morning, thirty-two year old Private Lucas Tek of San Benito Poite and seven other officers were returning to base at Camp Belizario after a patrol, when tragedy struck. The B.D.F. four tonner truck, which carried the team, reportedly experienced mechanical problems causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle in the area of the Tapir Camp in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. The vehicle overturned and all eight soldiers were injured, three were taken to the Loma Luz Hospital and then on to the Western Regional Hospital. The five others were transported via helicopter to the K.H.M.H. On arrival, Tek succumbed to his injuries. Deputy Commander of the Force, Colonel Javier Castellanos says that a post mortem on Tek will be conducted later this week.

Colonel Javier Castellanos, Deputy Commander, B.D.F.
“About little after eight o’clock in the morning, one of our vehicles was returning from the area of Caracol with a routine patrol that had been in the area returning back to base, to camp Belizario when apparently the vehicle experienced mechanical failure and that is when the vehicle overturned and thus causing this unfortunate incident. When the incident occurred, we received support from the British forces, the twenty-five flight helicopters flew to the location and we had a casualty evacuation of three of them initially to Karl Heusner. Unfortunately, on arrival one of the individuals, Private Lucas Tek was pronounced dead on arrival. We have not yet received an autopsy, which will indicate the cause of death.”
