Government to advertise post of Chief Justice

Story PictureForeign Minister and Attorney General, Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, on Monday tried to explain his meaning of the word “artificial”, which he used to describe the border between Belize and Guatemala following a meeting in Washington DC with his Guatemalan counterpart. According to Elrington, the borders are artificial because they are manmade and not formed by rivers and the like. That description is whipping up nationalist hysteria around the country among some who feel Elrington had sold out. When we got his explanation, we also asked Elrington about another matter, the issue of the tenure of the Chief Justice, Abdulai Conteh, who is approaching retirement age. According to Elrington the government will be advertising that post.

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, Attorney General
“He will reach the age of retirement some time during the course of this year and the Prime Minister is going to determine who is going to be the new Chief Justice. He comes to retirement age.”

Marion Ali
“Have there been any names that have come up?”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington
“Not that I am aware of. Nothing has been raised with me, but I’d like to tell people it’s a matter specifically for the prime minister.”

Marion Ali
“But you have your own person in mind that you will be recommending?”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington
“No. As a matter of fact, it’s not easy to find good, competent people and I think what is going to happen is that we’re going to have to do some advertisement in the news paper.”
