National Assembly will Convene at George Price Center

Inaugurated a little over fifty-three years ago, the National Assembly Building will finally be refurbished in 2024.  As we reported earlier this week, the Republic of China (Taiwan) granted the Government of Belize the funds necessary to undertake the much needed renovation.  This morning, at the start of today’s house meeting, Speaker Valerie Woods commented on the upcoming works that will see future sittings of the house being held at the George Price Center on an interim basis.

Valerie Woods, House Speaker

“This building has not gone through a major renovation since its inauguration and implementation of October 1970.  There is no denying, as I’m sure all members would agree, also members of the public, that there is much work to be done to modernize it, to make it more accessible, to allow for a more improved working environment for the staff, for parliamentarians and for the visiting public, including the media.  We have seen the limitations not only displayed during house meetings and senate meetings, through ceremonial sittings, but we’ve also seen during committee meetings and even regular staff meetings and meetings in general with parliamentarians and other diplomats.  Please be aware that the relocation will occur during the Easter recess period, either at the end of March or early April, so as to be ready for house sittings when the recess concludes which would be early May.”
