Over Fifty Stores Fined for Price Gouging

As many as fifty-nine businesses across the country have been issued tickets for violations of the new Supplies Control (Prices) Regulations.  In the first round of inspections conducted between November first and third, a total of one hundred and twelve retail outlets were inspected countrywide.  On Monday, Prime Minister John Briceño spoke on the ongoing issue of price gouging and the need for businesses that are found in violation to be called out publicly.

“They are the ones now when they cut the prices on a product, they do not pass it on to the consumer, they keep it.  And so, when you see wahn sausage deh da $2.25 and then suddenly ih go to $3.25, you know something is wrong.  We have been starting to visit and now we are getting even more aggressive right now whereby we have been to San Pedro a few times and the last count, I think, [Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai] told me that fifty of them have been fined already.  But now we‘re saying we also don‘t only need to fine, we need to name and shame so we need to start to be aggressively advertising and say, “Dehn ya businesses have been fined for price gouging and also Minister Coye had this good idea, he said listen, we have all this data from the Statistical Institute of Belize and they can literally tell you, these are the stores that are selling cheaper.  So we have to start to do all of that.”
