Assembly Building to Get Much Needed Sprucing Up

This afternoon in Belmopan, several parliamentarians, as well as representatives of the Republic of China (Taiwan) were on hand for a donation that will see the Assembly Building get a much needed makeover, fifty-three years after it was constructed.  As we’ve reported previously, the funds will be used to renovate the interior, as well as the exterior of the building which serves as the seat of the Government of Belize.  Following a brief ceremony, News Five spoke with House Speaker Valerie Woods about the pending upgrade.

“Well, it’s a longtime coming.  It’s the first major renovation.  You know, the National Assembly Building, as is, was established, implemented, inaugurated in 1970 and it was built at a time when several things weren’t considered, modernization, women, as well as accessibility and physical accessibility, but also accessibility by other means, whether that be digital and so forth, and also accessibility by media.  So this is something that is long overdue, it is one of the tenets of open parliament, inclusivity, transparency, accountability which requires infrastructure that allows that to occur and we are so very grateful to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for the grant, based on the project concept that was delivered, detailed drawings, the oversight by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing to make it happen.  But I’d also like to acknowledge that it would not be possible without first, the Ministry of Finance seeing it and acknowledging through the honorable John Briceño as the Minister of Finance that yes, this is something that needs to be done.”
