UNIBAM Lashes Out at G.O.B.’s So-called Human Rights Approach

Caleb Orozco

Orozco subsequently shifted focus to the Briceño administration, equally criticizing government as speaking, quote unquote, with a forked tongue.  This is in respect of government’s decision to support the human rights of Palestinians being slaughtered in Gaza, but not the rights of Belizeans as they pertain to anti-discrimination issues.

Caleb Orozco, Executive Director, UNIBAM

“The hypocrisy of the statements that they shared in the media and the hypocrisy in practice has to be challenged and I’m here to not only reflect on their inaccuracies and misrepresentations of undermining the rights of marginalized populations, I’m here to work with them to address the solutions.  In that regard though, if they are serious about a two-state solution and they are serious about the lives lost, they also can be serious about addressing anti-discrimination legislation in this country and championing properly for all and acknowledge the need for inclusive citizenship in this country.  One of the sad things about this case is the inconsistencies or the fork-tongue practices we have where the Cabinet, on principle, did all these things to register their dissatisfaction of the killing of innocent people, kudos to them, but they somehow forget their spine when it comes to addressing anti-discrimination issues that affect all their people.  And somehow they forget their spine or their memory gets lost when they forget that in Plan Belize, they have values and commitments that speak to equality and gender equity.  How does that work that you would speak up on principle for Palestinians, rightly so, and you don’t have a spine to speak about the development and quality of your citizens and ensuring that its inclusion of all in your development plans?  How does that work?  I’m done at there.”
