Minister of Education Optimistic B.N.T.U. Will Bounce Back

Francis Fonseca

The Minister of Education was also asked for his thoughts on the future of the Belize National Teachers Union. This is in light of the recent resignation of Ruth Shoman, as National President. Minister Fonseca was optimistic about the union’s ability to bounce back from its setback and says he has already met with acting President, Jorge Mejia.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education

“I think the Belize National Teachers Union obviously has a long, proud history of service to our nation, and I have always had great respect for the union leaders. You know, Senator Elena had a good working relationship with our ministry and the same with President Ruth Shoman during her brief tenure. I have already had an opportunity to talk to the acting President Mr. Jorge Mejia. Again, we have both agreed that we want to continue our collaboration in the interest of education, you know, in a positive, open, transparent way. So yes, the union, you know, is going through some difficult times. There are divisions in the union, which are, I find very disappointing.  But I know that the union will rebound, as it has always done, and will once again be on the forefront of defending the rights of teachers. And we look forward to working with them.”

“We were told there was going to be a discussion in relation to the salary for Mejia that he would be seconded, and the minister, of course, has to approve that.”

Francis Fonseca

“Yeah, that’s ongoing. We have agreed in principle to do that. It’s just a question of working it out. I think the actual paperwork has to be channeled through the Teaching Services Commission.”
