Meighan Brothers Has Case to Answer, Magistrate Rules

The Meighan brothers – Ellis and Tyrone will have to face the music next Wednesday, that is standing trial for being members of a gang. That ruling was handed down on Tuesday of this week against the car dealers of Banak Street, and the case was to continue today, but was adjourned because one of their defense attorneys had other court obligations. On Tuesday, the magistrate rejected a “no-case” submission by the men’s defense. Ellis and Tyrone are charged jointly, along with their younger sibling, Shaquille Meighan, who managed to abscond in December 2020, to the U.S. Back then, there were allegations that Ellis and Tyrone also tried to leave Belize via Mexico but that they were caught with their passports and handed over to Belizean authorities. They claim they were going to Mexico to seek medical attention for one of their sick children and that they were not fleeing the country. At the time, the Meighan brothers were out on bail granted by the High Court. Their bail was subsequently revoked but again granted in March of this year, on condition that they were under house arrest. However, while on that house arrest, they both picked up another criminal charge in April, that of aggravated burglary for which they were charged jointly, along with Jayir Flores, Kenrick Gordon, and Jamal Brackett, all of Belize City. The five were accused of committing the crime upon the Meighans’ neighbour, Elroy Jones and were denied bail and remanded back to prison. The trial for being a member of a gang will continue on Wednesday in a trial where their attorneys will put forth a defense.
