The country takes a bite out of Dental Health Week

Story PictureIt’s a yearly event in the calendar and the official opening of Dental Health Week took place today and that means the start of activities aimed at promoting awareness on how to properly care for your teeth. The theme this year is “Behind Every Healthy Smile is a Healthy Child” because, according to Dr. Raphael Samos, the education starts at an early age. Samos gave us more details on what to expect this week and how to care for your pearly whites.

Dr. Raphael Samos, Dentist
“It entails several things whereby we do activities countrywide to make the people know that dental is not just the taking out of teeth. We do several activities.”

Delahnie Bain
“What are some of those activities?”

Dr. Raphael Samos
“It goes from tooth brushing drills, distributing of toothbrushes, things like quizzes on the radio, television. For instance in Corozal they are planning on doing a quiz for the first three days, the second, the third and the fourth of November. They are having also enlightenment of good nutrition, good foods, tags and certificates at the end of the event. We are educating them on how to take care of their teeth, when to do it, what to do exactly. I have noticed on several occasions that patients come in and they are not really familiar too much of how to brush their teeth. They take into account that as they brush from kids that they are taught they are supposed to brush all the way up to adulthood. But for kids it’s different, the actual technique changes. All those educational ideas, all those lessons, the normal dentist can teach the growing population.”

Other activities include a puppet show in Dangriga, tours of dental offices and demonstrations of dental procedures further south in Punta Gorda.
