Excellence is the Champion of Champions in cricket

Story PictureGood evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. Week ten of the B.P.F.L. competition brought League Leading Hankook Verdes to the M.C.C. Grounds to face a floundering F.C. Belize who came in yesterday after losing two straight matches. Will they be able to avoid dropping three in a row? Well here goes. Feeling the heat from the city fans, F.C. Belize looks to strike early off this set piece that finds the head of Roberto Martinez only to see his attempt to score thwarted by the goalkeeper. F.C. continues to bring down the pressure as Cristobal Gilharry fires this shot with bad intentions but it’s right at the keeper. It’s another set piece that brings more offense for F.C. Belize when Harrison Tasher fires this ball at the near upright which leads to a big time save from Verdes midfielder Edon “Yellowman” Rawley. Harrison Tasher then picks out Jerome Archer with this center who tries to nod the ball into the goal but it goes down as another save for the Verdes keeper. We’re some thirty-five minutes in when Byron Usher pushes Amin August to the mat inside the eighteen and referee Jones rightly rules penalty. Marlon Mesa steps up and makes no mistake to give Verdes a 1-zip lead. Folks, five minutes later Jerome Archer tries to get off this shot at goal. He is brought down by the keeper and for a second time in the match, referee Jones rules penalty. Mark “Kello” Leslie gets the call from F.C. Belize to knot up the game for F.C. Belize. He pushes the ball too close to the goalie who saves the day for Hankook Verdes.

We’re eight minutes into second half when Harrison Tasher finds Jeromy James fresh off the bench and he ties the ballgame at one apiece with this touch. Now keep you eyes on this spot kick launched by Norman “Tilliman” Nunez, it is headed out to Shamir Pacheco who lets loose this volley that is poorly handled by goalkeeper Elroy Rawley. Edon Rawley smacks the loose ball into the net to give Verdes a 2-1 lead around the fifty-eighth minute. It’s getting late so Harrison Tasher smashes this set piece at goal but it inches over the horizontal bar. F.C. Belize now frantically searches for the equalizer on this play, but even with the handball they come up empty. Jerome Archer then gets this open look at goal from point blank range only to be denied by the crossbar. Hankook Verdes goes on to post the 2-1 regulation W as F.C. Belize extends this loosing streak to three in a row.

In the other match up played over the weekend, the Belize Defence Force bombed Wagiya at Dangriga with a 2-zip blast on goals from Deon McCauley and Orlando Jimenez. Thus going into week eleven, Hankook Verdes leads in the standings with fifteen points, the B.D.F. is next with fourteen, F.C. Belize shows nine, San Pedro seven and Wagiya six.

Turning to the Belize Super League, regular season concluded with three matches over the weekend. Paradise Freedom Fighters crushed Cayo South 7-4, San Felipe Barcelona bombed Texmar United 2-zip while Valley Renaissance picked up the 3-zip default win from San Pedro, who didn’t even bother to show up. The Super League will hold a meeting this week to determine which teams and what format will be utilized for the playoffs which could begin this Sunday so stay tuned.

On the cricket scene, the three game Champion of Champions cricket series culminated on Saturday with the match being staged at Burrell Boom. Excellence of Double Head had taken game one, while last week Sunrise of Lords Bank forced a game three by tying the series. They made a big move of guaranteeing the winning game three. Excellence batted first and wasted no time to put up big numbers. In fact, the big man today is Emmanuel McFadzean, who proves to be a thorn in the side of the Sunrise team by coming up with a massive fifty-four runs scored all out. Even on defense, Excellence is simply stellar as they hold Sunrise to a mere sixty-two runs all out and that’s big. This is how it ended people, the Sunrise batter loses concentration after looking to run and he does not cover his wicket area. The accurate throw from the outfield smashes down the wicket and the champion of champions is Excellence of Double Head Cabbage.

Player, Excellence Cricket Team
“We just came out to play game. We know that we can play. We had a misplay on Lords Bank field and we just game out to play hard and win this game. I would like to say thanks to support the tournament to all the fans who come and support us, cheer for us and coming next year we would love to see unite the cricket.”

Naturally, Emmanuel McFadzean gets the man of the match award but he also captures the trophy for the most sticks batted in. Dean Perez of Sunrise emerges as the best bowlers, while Edison Parks of Sunrise walked away with the man of the tournament award. Sports Monday says kudos to Excellence of Double Head. When you’re big, you’re large.

Hey folks, that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
