Mid afternoon burglary at Vista Del Mar

Story PictureThe home of the Canadians was not the only house broken into. Police also report a burglary in the Vista Del Mar area of Ladyville on Tuesday afternoon. Ashanti Guzman and her husband were not at home when the incident occurred, but the employee of the Kolbe prison, received a call after one p.m. that the alarm on the house was blaring. She immediately sprung into action and headed to the Ladyville Police Station to report the incident because her home was burglarized last June of over ten thousand dollars worth of items. Guzman told News Five today, the alarm saved her from experiencing another major loss.

Ashanti Guzman, Burglary Victim
“When I came the garage gate was open. There was no lock on it, which it normally has a lock on it. The back door was wide open, the bar door and the board door. When I went close to the doors, obviously the doors were wrenched off when I went inside. The alarm, I have an alarm system and the keypad was off the wall. As I discovered, the downstairs room was also searched. The drawers were open and four of my husband’s watches were missing.”

Jose Sanchez
“What evidence from the criminal was left behind?”

Ashanti Guzman
“Actually a pair of slippers was left in the mud right next to the garage door. And it was a muddy slippers as you caught pictures of that. So we assume it was the person who came in who ran left their slippers.”

Jose Sanchez
“They didn’t get too much, why do you think they left in a hurry?”

Ashanti Guzman
“Actually I have a home alarm system, once you try to get into the house the alarm will go off if you don’t have the code and that is what happened. Because the alarm did not go off, the burglars tried to disarm the alarm system and they couldn’t. They actually went to the switch box and tried to take off the switches, but that did not work, so the alarm kept on going and I guess that scared them off.”

Jose Sanchez
“There is a lot of bush in the area. Are you concerned that your house seems a bit secluded with all of this cover?”

Ashanti Guzman
“I’m very concerned, yes. Before I came to move in this area, I contacted the minister in Ladyville asking him to clear out the area and put proper roads and drainage in this area. Obviously that hasn’t been done. As you see I’m like in the wilderness.”

Guzman says that her home was burglarized in June of 2008 and the thieves escaped with over ten thousand dollars worth of jewelry.
