Newborn dies one hour after birth

Story PictureA baby girl was born at two o’clock on Sunday afternoon at the San Ignacio hospital. One hour later, she died and the parents are alleging that it’s hospital negligence. The young woman is a first time mother from San Ignacio and her husband claims he was kept away from his wife during the ordeal. News Five’s Delahnie Bain travelled to the west to cover this most recent claim of negligence.

Marisol Elizabeth Perez; that would have been the name of a baby girl born to Christina Garcia and Jose Perez on Sunday. But Marisol passed away at birth and her parents blame the San Ignacio hospital. We found a grief stricken Garcia, still in her hospital bed and while she chose not to go on camera, she told us what happened when she went into labour on Sunday morning.

Voice of Christina Garcia, Mother of Deceased
“When I came they took me where I was going to have the baby but I was told it’s not time and they transferred me from there because it was not time, they said. Then I was having strong pain. I called the doctor and she told me that it was not time. Later I was taken to another room and they told me to bathe and I was in pain and had to bathe on my own. They told me to go to a room and I stayed there on my own. Nobody was tending to me. I asked for water and nobody would listen to me until much later, they brought it. I was not looked after the way it should be done. When I told them I feel bad they said that first time moms take long to have babies. I was in pain and nobody would help me. They still said it was not time. When they finally took me to the room where the baby was going to be born, they said the baby was coming and then they said if I wanted to have the baby I needed to push or that the baby would die. One of them said they were wasting their time with me. The truth is that they never treated me well.”

Garcia’s sister Rosie was at the hospital with her, and she too believes that Marisol did not survive because the nurses were negligent.

Voice of: Rosie Garcia, Aunt of Deceased
“She was feeling pain again and I told her to push and then the lady started to scream and making noise and then she said no you shouldn’t do that. She said you shouldn’t make noise. I will take you out and that’s not going to be my problem and I feel bad because she is a nurse and she is a lady just like we ladies. Then I said she shouldn’t treat my sister like that. She knows that it’s her first time she should do better with my sister. I see they don’t treat their patients good here. They treat their patients like they are dogs.”

Voice of: Christina Garcia
“I came in at two in the morning in pain. I was in pain and they said I had to wait. I was in pain all day yesterday until about one-thirty in the afternoon they started to look after me but it was too late. I tried as hard as I can and then a doctor came and had surgery on me. The baby came at about two but was blue and at about three o’clock she died. They only told me that the baby was weak because I was not exercising. They didn’t tell me the baby had died. They took me from there and took me to another room and they left me and they wouldn’t tell me anything about her. The only I wish is that they treat women well, especially first time mothers because I am really in pain for what happened. They didn’t tend to my baby. They should help first time mothers in particular. We don’t know what to do.”

The child’s father, Jose Perez, says they will not take legal action, but he wants the hospital to make some serious changes.

Jose Perez, Father of Deceased
“I want to ask the hospital to give attention to the patients who come to have their babies. In my case, my baby died. Babies should not die due to their negligence. The truth is that they didn’t treat my wife well. Every time I wanted to come in to see her they kept me away. The thing is that they should move them because of what happened to my daughter because if they stay here it could happen to others. My wife suffered from two in the morning to two in the afternoon and they allowed my baby to die.”

There have been similar allegations of negligence, including the well known case of baby Johnson in Punta Gorda.
