Tropical Storm Ida spares Belize and moves north

Story PictureTropical Storm Ida did not have affect Belize that Tropical Depression number sixteen had last year, but it did claim forty lives in neighbouring El Salvador after it dumped heavy rains over that country for three days. The deaths happened in at least five of the fourteen provinces in the mountainous regions where it had been raining since Thursday. Hurricane Ida passed through Nicaragua on Thursday, slamming the country’s Atlantic coast, and damaging or destroying about five hundred homes, as well as roads and bridges. Ida has weakened to a tropical storm as it churns northward toward the central Gulf coast. Ida continues to move toward the north and a turn to the northeast is expected tonight. The current forecast brings Ida into the northern Gulf Coast on Tuesday morning. Tropical storm warnings are in effect from Grand Isle, Louisiana east to the Aucilla River in Florida.
