Home invasion and alleged rape suspect charged in court

Story PictureOn Pan American Day, October twelfth, a brutal home invasion occurred at Freetown Sibun, in Hattieville Village. An elderly Canadian couple that migrated to Belize were held up at gunpoint and robbed. But while inside the secluded home, the burglar attacked the sixty two year old woman and raped her. Police say that when three culprits entered the home they stole took a number of household items including two laptops, a television, a digital camera and the couples Chevy Blazer. Police had been looking for a suspect ever since. They believed that because the couple reported the incident, the criminal to return to the house and trashed everything. Today, the alleged rapist was identified as twenty-one year old Cannon Obispo. Obispo was detained by police on November sixth, when they found him riding a bicycle in Mahogany Heights on the Western Highway. Obispo, a resident and construction Worker of Teakettle Village was charged with Rape and Aggravated Burglary. He was unrepresented. But before he went to court, Obispo had to be taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for burns he claimed he received at the hands of the police. Obispo asked the magistrate to speak and claimed he was beaten by the police and scalded with hot water all over his body, including chest and private parts. He alleged that officers from both Mahogany Heights and Hattieville are responsible for his injuries. Magistrate Sharon Frazer read the charges twice as Obispo said he could not hear out of one ear. Obispo’s next court appearance is scheduled for December twenty-third.

Police have also charged three other individuals for the stolen goods. Two business persons of Cotton Tree Village in Cayo and one of their spouses were charged separately after items stolen from the home of the Canadian couple were found in their possession. Twenty-two year old Tan Jing Xiao was charged for the possession of the Sony Laptop, which was found in his shop. Sixty-two year old Richard Bishop, an Accountant of Reggae Street in Belize City, along with his common-law-wife, thirty-one year old Genevieve Henriquez, a Businesswoman of Cotton Tree, were also charged with when police found the TV which was stolen Harold Reeves.
