Man freed of carnal knowledge charge

In another criminal matter before the court, a Corozal man who was accused in 2008 by an eleven year old girl of carnal knowledge walked free on Monday when the child could not remember the exact date when the incident supposedly happened. Twenty-one year old Alex Garcia was freed by a jury of nine in the Orange Walk Magistrates’ Court. After two hours of deliberation, seven jurors voted in favor of Garcia’s acquittal and two believed he was guilty. The then eleven year-old child testified that between the first and the fifteenth of June 2008 she visited Garcia’s house where he had sex with her. The child could not remember the exact date but said she was in the company of her cousin and another female. She said that after a conversation with Garcia, he took her to a bedroom where they had sexual intercourse. In order to prove the charge, the child had to tell the court exactly what happened but she was initially reluctant to do so. Garcia denied the allegations and told the court that at the time, he was not only sick, but that he was also in San Pedro. He said it wasn’t until after he recovered from his illness and returned to Corozal that he learned that he was wanted for carnal knowledge. Garcia was represented by Area Representative Marcel Cardona while Trienia Young represented the DPP’s office. While that trial has concluded, police are investigating another case of rape, this time on Caye Caulker. An eighteen year old woman from the island reported that on Sunday between two and two-thirty a.m., she awoke to an intruder in her bedroom. The man repeatedly beat her on the face until she was unconscious. When she gained consciousness the woman said she recognized a man known to her as Carlos Carias who was having sex with her against her will. Caye Caulker police has since detained Carias.
