Family finds out the cause of newborn’s death

Story PictureMarisol Elizabeth Perez died one hour after she was born on Sunday and her parents attribute the tragedy to hospital negligence. It is not an unfamiliar allegation and a check of our archives shows that Marisol was the seventh child to pass away under suspicious circumstances in this year alone. The incidents come from the north to south of the country. It started in the deep south, when Cenaida Reymundo was left to deliver her son on her own at the Punta Gorda Polyclinic. That was followed by a string of flaws in the health system that led to the newborn’s death seven days after birth. Days later on May twenty-eighth two families felt the pain of losing a child. Glendy Chi lost her newborn son at the Corozal Hospital because doctors waited too long to induce labour. Meanwhile in Punta Gorda, Florencia Canti and Jerome Sho’s six month old son was turned away from the PG Polyclinic and later died because his condition deteriorated severely by the time he was taken to another health facility. Next was the case of twenty-one month old Jaydan Guy, who choked on a red kidney bean. His parents, Eckert and Anna Guy felt that the health system failed them because enough was not done to save their child. In yet another tragedy, Salome Busano’s two day old baby boy died at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on August eighteenth after she claims he was prematurely discharged with a bad case of jaundice. Another child in the long list was five day old Alexander Russel Faber who died last Thursday allegedly because he was not properly cared for at the K.H.M.H. In the latest case, Christina Garcia and Jose Perez, Marisol’s parents, buried her on Monday in Billy White Village in Cayo. Garcia was admitted to the hospital at two o’clock on Sunday morning and it was until two o’clock Sunday afternoon that a cesarean section was performed on her. When we spoke to the baby’s uncle via phone today, he said the family has heard an explanation from the doctors.

Roberto Garcia, Uncle of Deceased
“The baby swallowed that thing from the birth that they have in the womb. The green liquid, that’s what the doctor told me. He explained it very good to me and he tell me that the green liquid was too thick that the baby swallowed and all that gone into his lungs. And then when the baby came out his lungs take air, but they couldn’t take air because of the liquid that he had swallowed already. And that’s why the baby couldn’t live.”

“Do you know who was the nurse or doctor attending to Christina?”

Roberto Garcia
“I don’t know their name. I know them, but I don’t know their name. Their uniform no have no name or number. I didn’t see no number on them. if I see them I will know them but I don’t know. But one I know was the one that did the surgery on she, that’s Pacheco, that’s a doctor and then the two nurses he had, but I don’t know their name. I know Pacheco because he was the one that came and told my brother in law why the baby died and he was sorry about that and that he did his best to make the baby live, but he couldn’t do it.”

We checked with a pediatrician to get a better understanding of what caused baby Marisol’s death. While he was not the attending doctor, we were told that it may have been Meconium Aspiration Syndrome, which is caused by a difficult birth. The family believes that the delayed delivery of the baby led to her death. The San Ignacio did not wish to comment on the tragic death of baby Marisol.
