Police recover getaway vehicle used in murder of businessman

Story PictureThe nation’s eighty-fourth murder occurred on Wednesday evening in Belize City when a brazen gunman drove a vehicle to a busy construction site and opened fire at the owner. The businessman died on the spot and the slaying has left police clueless. While no one except for police was willing to talk on camera out of fear, we pieced together this puzzle. News Five’s Marion Ali reports.

Today there were black bows on the gate and office of PreCom Limited, the construction site next to the Customs Department, which was owned and operated by thirty-eight year old Jason Coombs. The businessman from Ladyville was gunned down by a man who entered the compound shortly before five on Wednesday evening in what is now described as a gold colored car.

Clement Palacio, PR Officer, Police Department
“A gold car entered the compound and the driver spoke to the victim and he was subsequently shot. The driver left the compound and police later found the vehicle on Malcolm Street. The license plate again seems not to have corresponded so all of that police are trying to uncover.”

Marion Ali
“Reports reaching News Five are that the driver parked the vehicle at this location here on Malcolm Street before making his way down this narrow road leading to Faber’s Road. That person has been described to us by eyewitnesses as a brown-skinned man wearing long dreadlocks and who walks with a limp.”

Police say they have recovered several nine millimeter expended shells from inside the car. And while they have detained several people for questioning they have been having difficulty establishing a motive because the victim has a clean police record.

Clement Palacio
“He’s not been known to be any type of trouble-maker and when murders like these happen the society is appalled and I think a lotta questions are asked.”

Police are asking anyone who might have information leading to an arrest to call them or Crimestoppers at 0800-922-8477. Reporting for News Five, Marion Ali.

Jason Coombs is the father of one child and his common-law wife is expecting their second.
