Will Belize Rural South Constituency Map be Redrawn?

Andre Perez

The current redistricting exercise is not without its share of controversy.  A Re-Division Task Force Report prepared by several members of that working group, including Chairperson and Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai and Senator Collet Montejo has also been leaked to the media.  In the situational analysis presented in the document, it establishes the fact that Belize’s population grew by a little over fifty percent between 2005 and 2022. Of the four hundred and forty-one thousand, four hundred and seventy-one persons, Belize District has recorded the largest population growth.  Conversely, Toledo District has recorded the smallest.  Electoral divisions recording notable increases in the number of registered electors included Belize Rural Central, Belize Rural South, Belmopan and Cayo North. But is Belize Rural South, the constituency led by P.U.P. Area Representative Andre Perez, being redrawn? That’s what we asked him earlier today.

Andre Perez, Area Rep, Belize Rural South

“I can tell you that the splitting up and understanding that the demographics of Belize District has changed.  Yes, I represent the third largest constituency by there are many studies out there that show that while the act shows that we need to be dividing it evenly, as it relates to population, you gotta look at the demographics, you gotta look at the communities.  You can‘t be splitting it just like that.  For example, Ambergris Caye, it‘s a unique situation, and I am not saying because people like tell you, oh you da wahn republic.  No, no.  It‘s just the way how we work there, it‘s so concentrated.  It‘s a tiny town, very concentrated, twenty-five thousand people living there in one area and then constantly moving around.  There‘s nobody living in one specific place.  This is a place that people move around.  And so is Caye Caulker, Caye Caulker is a very unique community and we are inherently linked together.  So as a representative, that I work with them, everything that I do as an area rep is directly related to both islands.  There is nothing that says it‘s only San Pedro or Caye Caulker.  So I‘m saying that whatever happens, my opinion is that it‘s not about the population, it‘s about geographically, how do you cut this up.”
