PM on New AG: Aside from his Impressive Resume, He’s a Man for Others

Anthony Sylvestre

As we’ve reported, Anthony Sylvestre is the new Attorney General. He replaces Magali Marin-Young, who had expressed intent to return to private practice. Sylvestre has held several positions on committees and boards, including the Board of Trustees of the University of Belize, on the Belize Advisory Council on the Guatemalan Claim, and the Income and Business Tax Appeals Board. Today, Prime Minister John Briceño told reporters that aside from Sylvestre’s impressive resume, he is also a man for others.

“Anthony Sylvester, you know, Anthony Sylvester has been a champion for the poor, you know, and many poor people when they can’t do better, they would go to people like Anthony, who has a social conscience in service as an attorney, not only the big clients, but also the poor people. But, apart from that, he’s one of the experts in criminal law and also in constitutional law. So our present Attorney General said it well in Cabinet, on Wednesday where she made the point that now the next step, the next Attorney General now needs to start to look at  criminal law in trying to make whatever amendments or modernizing what we have for it to be more effective. So we look forward to see what plans Anthony has. He’s a hardworking person, a very humble, but also caring, and I think that he fits the profile of what we want in an Attorney General in a People’s United Party government.”

“So he will no longer be chair of UB?”

Prime Minister John Briceño

“No, he is resigning from everything because he’ll have to spend his time as the Attorney General. It’s a lot of work. We do have a lot of work.”
