$1 Million to Fight Narco Trafficking in Northern Belize

Prime Minister John Briceño

As we said, the Government of Belize is allocating an additional one million dollars to the Belize Police Department, to assist with its fight against narco trafficking in northern Belize. The Briceño administration sought approval from the House of Representatives on Friday to allocate the funds as part of its sixty-nine million dollars Supplementary Allocation Bill. Here is how that debate went.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“Turning to a matter of serious concern, that of citizen security, the reports of a Mexican cartel exacting violence upon our citizens in northern part of Belize is no secret. This requires urgent and meaningful response as requested by the police department; we are proposing to immediately allocate one million dollars towards this heavy and serious threat towards our national security.”

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition

“The narco war in Corozal, I can understand having to reinforce our troops and security forces Madam Speaker. You have a great presentation you made with regards to the necessity of reinforcing our security forces with a million dollars. But it really isn’t a million dollar. Again, never are you able to be transparent and straight forward with the Belizean people, because you seven hundred and eighty-eight thousand dollars for national defense and border security in addition to that million dollars that you have described.”
