Serrano’s Bus Service Threatens to Protest after Losing Road Service Permit

Rodwell Ferguson

While with Minister of Transport Rodwell Ferguson, he also gave brief comments on a planned protest by Serrano’s Bus Service in Ladyville. The bus line is saying that they’ve made significant investments to become compliant with transport regulations, but nevertheless lost their road service permit. Minister Ferguson says that a decision was taken by the Transport Board not to renew Serrano’s permit when it expired earlier this year.

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport

“When you are given your road service permit, it comes with certain criteria that you must be able to reach based on the department’s perspective. If I am correct in saying that the transport board is independent of me; while we appoint them, they act on their own behalf. And over the last one year I believe, every so often, there is a report coming against Serrano. And so the board come to the conclusion that it is time now for us to say to Serrano we gotta part ways since your contract expires, I believe sometime in April or March – I can’t recall. Fortunately, the Transport Board has a member of the bus operators on the board, Mister Shaw, who also voted unanimously against with the other members to say it is time for Serrano to go.  While he have his investment, you are providing a service for the community and so the board decided you know what, we are not going to renew your contract. Mister Shaw came back to me afterwards and say as the minister, can you overturn their decision. I said, I will respect the decision of the Transport Board and we’ll see where it goes from there.”
