Does the Government Help All of Belize?
Tonight, we continue our look at the Belize 2023 Polling Survey, an exercise that was conducted with one thousand, sixty-six voters between February and April of this year. The survey is a mixed sample to represent both the political and population makeup of Belize. Viking Strategies has been carrying out surveys in Belize since 2009. In tonight’s analysis, we look at government’s effectiveness in helping Belizeans across the country. Here’s what we found out.
Trygve Olson, Principal, Viking Strategies
“First thing that we asked about the government is, does the government help all of Belize? We gave them four options. Twenty percent said the government does a good job of addressing issues facing people in the entire country. Twenty percent said they do a good job in Belize City but not elsewhere. Seventeen said the government does a good job addressing issues facing people outside of Belize City, forty-three percent said the government isn‘t doing a good job in either place. If I were in the Government of Belize, I would say, well the good news is at least they don‘t think we‘re favoring any region. The bad news is almost half of Belizeans don‘t think we‘re doing a good job with any region which is a little bit of an issue. What is the most important issue? Again, at the point that we‘re doing this, it‘s all economics and it‘s primarily cost of living and I get that the government likely, there are international factors in the cost of living situation. Obviously, we‘ve seen cost of living in the United States go up. I think that‘s true in Europe as well, it has had high inflation. But the reality is, I don‘t think that that excuse for voters really cuts it. They want to understand what‘s gonna be done.”
