Belmopan Area Representative Throws Full Support behind $90 Million Belmopan Hospital

The proposed ninety million dollar tertiary level hospital in Belmopan has seen support from across the government and disapproval from the opposition. On one hand, the Briceño administration argues that the Western Regional Hospital’s infrastructure has outlived its time and purpose and that there is a need for the construction of a second national referral hospital in Belize. On the other hand, the opposition contends that the Government of Belize should prioritize investing those ninety million dollars into meeting the current needs of public health facilities across the country. Today, we caught up with Oscar Mira, the Area Representative for Belmopan. We asked him for his thoughts on the proposed hospital in his constituency.

“The short answer is yes. And I would like to invite you guys for a tour of the Belmopan Western Regional Hospital. Built in 1970, I think the Western Regional Hospital has outgrown it, has outlasted its life. We cannot be investing in crumbling infrastructure. We need a new hospital. If you would go and look at the infrastructure that is presently at the Western Regional Hospital, you will see that it is beyond repair. Um, just a few weeks ago, all the patients from the wards had to be moved to another area because the roof was leaking. They had to redo the whole roof. The hospital, as you know, and for those of us who were a little bit older than you guys, you know,  know that it was not a purpose built hospital. It was in the past, but it, it has outlived its purpose. Many of the walkways, as we knew it before, had to be, they put walls on it and try to accommodate the growing needs of our population. But we’re not talking about a building. We’re talking about fully functioned, fully equipped hospital. We are partnering with the Ministry of Education, University of Belize to ensure that we have a hospital that will also serve as a learning institution. University of Belize is rolling out its medical program. We need somewhere for our pharmacists or nurses or doctors to go and do their, their studies to do their practice. And this university tertiary level referral hospital is going to do just that. I cannot emphasize more the importance of having an alternative to KHMH. I am fully in support of KHMH and I think that we need to do more to ensure KHMH is brought up to standard, but we also need to have an alternative hospital and the capital, this is Belmopan, this is the capital.”
