B.E.L Records Unprecedented Rise in Electricity Usage over the Past Few Weeks

The Belize Electricity Limited has noted a sharp and unprecedented rise in electricity usage over the past few weeks. They say this is being caused by the unusually hot and humid weather conditions being experienced across the country. In fact, according to the utility company the demand for electricity at certain times during the first half of this week alone has already surpassed the peak demand that had been projected for this year by over three and a half percent and is expected to further increase over the next few weeks. B.E.L. notes that the situation is complicated by the sudden unavailability of the power plant that serves as the main backup if supply is lost from Mexico. That plant is undergoing urgent maintenance.  As a result, the Belize Electricity Limited says it is putting in place contingency measures to mitigate possible disruptions in the supply of electricity to customers that could occur during the remainder of this week through to next weekend.
