SICA Council of Ministers of Education and Culture Discuss Pertinent Topics

The Council of Ministers of Education and Culture from Central America has been meeting in Belize since Thursday.  The country presently holds the pro tempore presidency of SICA. It’s an event that’s held biannually to discuss the myriad of topics that fall under the different sectors of the Council. At the close of the session today, C.E.O. in the Ministry of Education, Dian Maheia told us what they looked at this time around.

“Belize, I understand for a while, was not very active. Over the past couple of years, we’ve become more active and so some of the issues are ongoing. Issues that we recognize are relevant to everyone and not only to us – talking about things like curriculum revolution. How do you as a country make sure that the curriculum that is in the schools is relevant to the needs of the nation today? We’re not the only country having those conversations, with culture, looking at things like respecting and promoting African descendants or indigenous peoples. So, you know, in both areas of education and culture, we’re having discussions that really are relevant to Belize, yes, but also to the region. So it’s an opportunity for us to listen to one another and to learn from one another.”
