Orange Walk Town Likely to Become First Fairtrade Town in the Region

John Burgos

As a part of today’s World Fairtrade Day celebrations, an Orange Walk Fairtrade logo was officially launched.  We have told you about associations being Fairtrade certified. But, there are also opportunities available for towns to be Fairtrade certified. A committee has been established to certify Orange Walk Town as the first Fairtrade Town in the region. This is a huge step for Sugar City and John Burgos the Chairman of the Orange Walk Fairtrade Committee told us more.

John Burgos, Chairman, Orange Walk Fairtrade Committee

“The primary goal of the committee is to get the Orange Walk Town to be recognized as a Fairtrade town globally. We know that Fairtrade is a global movement, it started in Europe but it has expanded into Central America and the Caribbean. So, if Orange Walk does become a Fairtrade town we will make history because it is going to be the first one in the region to do that. We cannot be saying yes you need to package, prepare. We also need to provide a forum and the opportunity for them to present showcase and sell the product. So we are going to do the first of four Orange Walk Fairtrade Market Days. So it is going to be on the first of July starting at nine o’clock and end at five in the morning. So, we are going to be showcasing all these local products, the best recado, the best honesty, coconut oil, fruits, local plants, all of these available. We will be focusing on local Maya Mestizo cuisine. Come get the best tamales, escabeche, these are the things we want to promote and highlight.”
