Caleb Lashes Out!

Caleb Orozco

UNIBAM’s Executive Director, Caleb Orozco, is lashing out against what he says are premature discussions surrounding the Belize Constitution and the supremacy of God. Orozco sits on the People’s Constitution Commission (P.C.C.), which has representation from a wide cross-section of society. The commission is tasked with drafting and guiding the process of promulgating a new constitution or making amendments. That’s no easy task, and with the participation of dozens of representatives with strong opinions, the road to a new constitution is expected to be bumpy. Reports coming out of the P.C.C. suggest that representatives of the LGBTQ+ community will seek to challenge the “supremacy of God” in the constitution. This morning, News 5 caught up with Orozco, who says that those who are opining are doing so without the proper information.

“So, we cannot say in this country that the Catholic Church is more privileged than the Baha’i faith. Or we cannot say in this country that the Jehovah Witness is less privileged than the Anglican Church. That is not what has been said in case precedent. Beyond that, there’s this argument that, or I saw a post that said that somehow debating the removal of supremacy of God from the Constitution is reverse discrimination. How in the world can it be reverse discrimination if you have not demonstrated any knowledge of civil rights history, any knowledge of case precedent, any knowledge of human rights? In this case, the state international obligation or the constitutional obligation of the state. How can you speak of reverse racism or in this case, reverse discrimination in such an ill informed capacity? It’s lazy journalism. Let’s talk about all the murders, over 2000 plus people have been killed. Does that reflect our seriousness in our Christian faith? Let’s talk about all the cases between 2016 and 2018 that appeared in the family court where 70% of the cases are dropped. Does that reflect our seriousness about the Christian faith of this country? Stop it! If we’re going to speak about issues speak from a place of preparation and homework for God’s sake. Speak from a place of knowledge, not from a place of stupidity. In a country where we spend over a quarter of the national budget on education, how in the hell can we act so stupidly in discussing a simple free supremacy of God without homework? What happened? Many of the people in this country do not like to do their homework at school. So, they are now pulling out of their ears and they’re behind a position that does not exist in legal case precedent.  Come on!
