Police Carry Out Interventions to Quell Intra-gang Rivalries

Chester Williams

According to ComPol Williams, several interventions have been done in an attempt to quell recent flare ups among the gangs.  Efforts have also been made to prevent reprisals in the case of two murders that occurred in Belize City last week.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“We have been able to ensure that with the two murders we have had, the one on Police Street and the one on Antelope Street, that there is no retaliation and that goes to show that the police efforts are yielding good results.  We just came out of an intervention session with the group from George Street and again, the George Street issue is more like a domestic situation because it‘s like an intra-rivalry between those elements.  And when you do have intra-rivalries, it is often more difficult to contain because they all know each others movements, whereabouts and everything, and so it is much easier for them to find their rivals as opposed to when you have cross-gang incidents.  The one on Police Street, we will be doing an intervention session this afternoon.  But again, I have said to the GI3 that there are some elements that we must bring charges against for being members of gangs and put them out of circulation because while we do have those elements who are behaving and trying to change, we have some that are just taunting them and when we have that, we must do what needs to be done to put away the “taunters” with a view to ensure that the program‘s objectives are achieved.  So there is where we are right not with the gang issue.  It is not as other flare ups that you all would know.  Normally when you have flare ups, there are sometimes up to four, five, six murders, a streak of murders.  But again, through our efforts we have been able to ensure that that is not the case this time around.”
