Curriculum Reform Update; Assessment Underway

Dian Maheia

Earlier today, when the media caught up with the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Education, she was asked for an update on the rollout of the competency-based curriculum which was piloted at the start of the 2022 school year.  As we’ve reported, education stakeholders have been travelling to schools across the country getting feedback. While the academic calendar has not come to a close as yet, C.E.O. Dian Maheia gave an update on the assessment process so far.

“We are currently working with secondary schools. So since last month, this month, into May, the team is visiting high schools across the country, finding out again what their needs are, what their perspective is, what their concerns are. Really it is about looking at the concerns – how do you begin to move toward more competency-based learning. But again, the general atmosphere seems to be positive, right; that people acknowledge the concerns, which is what you have to do – change is always different. So if you can acknowledge the fact that we have concerns, we are not sure about certain things, we need to figure this out – that’s where we are. We’re figuring things out as we plan for the coming academic year for secondary schools. This is considered our transition year especially for the primary schools, so primary schools have been a lot more engaged. With secondary schools now, we are just working with them on the learning outcomes, getting feedback from them and like that. So, we are further ahead of the game with primary than we are with secondary.”
