Mexico wins international tennis tournament

Story Picture
Good evening. I’m James Adderley and welcome to this version of Sports Monday.

The Civic Center Basketball Tournament is rapidly moving into the 18th playoffs. So Friday night we took our cameras to view M & M’s Christian Ambassadors against the lowly Port Loyola Jackals.

At the tip off it’s Curtis Lewis beating Andrew Robateau for a tap to Patrick Thompson and the Jackals score the first two points on the ballgame. The Ambassadors then look for points from Francis Usher; he delivers this as he ties the ballgame at 6 a piece.

If you’re into the spectacular give it up for Greg Williams who goes behind the back to give Douglas’ side the easy 2 point plus Hyde picks up the foul. Then the Ambassadors begin to pull away. Francis Usher goes for the long hoop – nabs it down. It’s Usher again going down the teeth of the Jackals defense untouched for 2 points.

At the half it’s a 10-10 M & M – Christian Ambassadors lead. In second half the Jackals try to make a run and Patrick Thompson shows real class to bob this shot under pressure. But the Ambassadors weren’t about to tumble to them. Armin Arana strikes for 3 points. Still the score will be called for lack of Jackals defense: First of all nobody covers the shooter on the inbound pass and then no one knocks out the miss shot which gives Douglas Hyde two more easy points. The Ambassadors do go on to win this ballgame, 77-62. And are now assured of a post season play with a record of 5 wins, 1 loss.

Meanwhile folks lets check in to the night cap showdown between Reggae by the River and Regent Royals. In second half action and the score is tied at 45 points a piece with 14 minutes to go. It’s Norman Lamb who breaks the tie with this strain to give the Reggae Boys its first lead in a ballgame. However, the Royals come right back with this 3 of their own and the pressure mounts people.

And no folks this is not a repeat but another 3 from Norman Lamb from practically the same spot. On this press, good ball movements by Reggae by the River are awarded with 2 points as Norman Lamb finishes. The Reggae Boys roll to a 73-64 big W and all assured of a playoff part.

Turning to the lawn tennis scene, the Senior Men’s Doubles Tournament was staged at the Pickwick Club this weekend. As expected the duo of Billy Musa Sr. and Sonny Meighan arrived at the finals. They faced Enrique Bautista and Raul Mesquita of Mexico. The Belize side is down 6-7 from the first set when Sonny Meighan serves and he gets credited with the 15 points. Billy Musa’s serve leads to a smash from the opposition to tie the set. When the tired legs of Sonny Meighan cannot catch up with this long, the Mexican catch up the lead. The Mexicans take the Senior Men’s Double Title of Belize with a 6-3, 7-6 showing.

Anyway, that’s it for now. We invite you back same time, same place, next week.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
