Ministry of Transport Responds to Allegations Arising over Procurement of A.C.’s

Rodwell Fergueson

Earlier today the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Transport responded to an allegation on Wave Radio in which a minister of government is accused of blatant corruption that is attempting to use public monies to install twenty-five air-conditioning units at a hotel allegedly owned by the said minister, who was unnamed in the post. The ministry’s release states in part, quote, for the record, there is absolutely no truth to the information contained in the post, nor in what was stated on Wave Radio. Ten A/C units were purchased by the Ministry of Transport to be placed at the ministry’s offices in the south. All A/C units have been installed. The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Transport intends to pursue every legal avenue to bring action against the owner/operators of the blog, as well as against Wave Radio, for the clear slander of a government minister, and by extension the entire Government of Belize, without any basis in fact. This evening, the President of the P.S.U, Dean Flowers said that this allegation brings to light the need for the government to revert to the system of permanent secretaries rather than chief executive officers.

“I have absolutely no idea what’s happening between the Hon Ferguson and his CEO. I was updated this morning in terms of what are the allegations behind it and also, I understand that there may have been some actions taken by the finance officer within the ministry. I am yet to ascertain that. As it relates to that sweetheart quarrel, if I could call it that, I don’t have much to say. I think what it does is reinforces the Public Service Union’s argument that the time has come for this administration to revert to permanent secretaries because if a permanent secretary was there, I’m pretty sure that the Hon. Ferguson, who by the way is riding a very high horse, if you see his interview of late, would have been put in his place.”
