Mayor Says After Re-assessment, Digi Park Parking Meters Could Be Removed

The installation of the parking meters in front of the parking spaces at the Digi Park in Belize City has raised the ire of the public. Some are saying it goes against the order of business for those who vend from the park itself. Others argue that it does not support family-oriented events at the location because parking there is now costing families that visit the area for recreation. But today Mayor Bernard Wagner explained that the council had noticed that the spaces were being taken up all day by people who don’t use the facility, but merely work in the area and that was creating problems for others who legitimately want access. He said that a new assessment later this month could result in the removal of the meters and the re-introduction of traffic wardens in the area.

“Actually, the pilot project comes to an end the ending of March right here. And so we’ll reassess where we stand. Nothing is written in stone. We understand their situation. I continue to liaise with them, but the point here is that we are here to serve the residents. We, we don’t have any intention of sending any one of those vendors out of business. Actually we want them to be successful business. And if they have a issue there with the parking meters at the end of the pilot project, we reassess and see how it works. We know it worked well on Albert Street. Maybe it doesn’t work well in the Digi Park area, and so we are open for, for those discussions.”
