B.B.A President Appeals to Small Bus Operators to Work Together to Amalgamate

Thomas Shaw

Following the lengthy meeting, B.B.A. President Thomas Shaw made an appeal to the smaller bus operators to work together with the bigger companies so that there will be a smooth transition to having only two bus companies running the three routes.

Thomas Shaw, President, Belize Bus Association

“We agreed on the transformation of the industry, that we must form companies, cooperatives in order to make it work because there are a lot of operators. It’s not to say that the operators will be taken out, but the smaller ones that have one bus. So operators, if you’re listening, this is serious. Let’s see how we can solve this situation, due to the fact that when there are a lot of operators, there are too many calls to the ministry, and so they rather deal with one or two companies. Whenever the permit goes, instead of dealing with X, Y, Z, you’re dealing with one or two entities, and I think that, so what will have been decided well, that was one of the recommendations made by the consultants, that: form cooperative companies where you have two operators in the north, two in the south. So for now, it’s for us now to come together. We have six months to do so in order to get all the operators on board and to let them know that if you do not form cooperatives or be part of a company, then you’re out the door.”
