B.P.P. Leader Weighs In on Transport the Bus Companies and their Permits

Leader of the Belize Progressive Party, Wil Maheia, also weighed in on Ritchie’s case and what he feels is an unreasonable approach by the government to Belizean-owned bus companies. He believes that the companies are mostly Belizean families who have been providing the service for decades, and they should be given a chance to continue doing so.

“In this country, if you do a survey of all the bosses that is owned in this country, they’re owned, they’re family owned businesses. And I would think that is something that we want to protect and preserve in our country. These Belizean-owned companies are the ones that’s transporting eighty percent of the workers in this country. So we must look out for them. We want the workers to be comfortable. We want, we want, we don’t want the fair to be exorbitant. We want to look out for the Belizean workers. Who transport these Belizean workers. It is these Belizean owned family bosses who transport these people. So I’m saying instead of, instead of pressuring them to come out of the business, help them to stay in the business and help them to get better bosses with some incentives, some duty-free fuel and that sort of stuff, so that they could build their fleet.”
