G.O.B. Prepares for Cuban President Visit to Belize

Prime Minister John Briceño

The Government of Belize is preparing for the arrival of Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez on Sunday, February twelfth. Belize is preparing a fitting welcome for the Cuban leader, reflecting the close relationship between our two countries. He will arrive at Phillip Goldson International Airport, after which a special sitting of the House of Representatives will be held at the Government House. Today the Prime Minister spoke of the significance of the official visit.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“We are quite excited to have the President of Cuba to visit Belize. As you know, Belize has had a very close relationship with Cuba. Cuba through Fidel Castro in the seventies was among the first countries that felt that they needed to support Belize’s quest for independence. He worked very closely with George Price and it is through effort and Panama that we managed to break that Latin American grip with support for Guatemala. So, it is something we can never forget and we will always be grateful. We have the issues with the Cuban brigade, the scholarships. There are so much that we are very thankful to Cuba so that President of Cuba for the first time is indeed coming to Belize is for us a big thing. It is very exciting. It is unfortunate that he could only be here for a short while. But, we will be having different discussion with them. Certainly education is one of them, immigration, the issue of health, all of these matters are very important to both countries and we do plan to have some of these, to discuss some of these items.”
