I.C.J. Sets Time Limit For Belize/Honduras Case
In November 2022, Belize applied to the International Court of Justice (I.C.J.) to seek a final and binding resolution under international law of the dispute between Belize and Honduras over the Sapodilla Cayes. At the time of the announcement, the Government explained that the measure was necessary to protect the vital interests of Belize and would ensure a full and final settlement of all outstanding disputes on Belize’s territory. The court has now set time limits for the Belize/Honduras case. Honduras has had a claim to the Sapodilla Cayes in its constitution since 1982. According to the Government, Belize did seek to negotiate with Honduras a resolution of the claim, which would acknowledge Belize’s exclusive sovereignty over the Cayes. However, it was not successful.
