BSART Expresses Need for Better Monitoring

Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident, but BSART’s executive director Wendy Garcia says that there must be better monitoring of the cave system by tour guides and others, because it could have been deadly.

“NICH needs to put some more monitoring aspects in place. It’s the rainy season and the weather, they need to monitor the weather conditions and all those stuff. The rains have a big effect on flooding of these caves so these guys need to constantly monitor the weather, monitor the levels of the water and at some point they need to make a decision of when and where these tourists need to go into the cave so these things do not occur. So for the safety of everybody, they need to make strong regulation that when either they do the cave system or they don’t because of the weather condition and water level.”

“But thankfully there was no casualty?”

“Yes; that was the good part. The water came up and it went down so that was the good part, however, it could have been worst if the water continued rising because of the rain. So we have to delay our events. It was good that no one got injured.”
