Concerns over Cruise Ship Docking Facility in Belize City

Last week, it was officially confirmed by the Chair of the National Environmental Appraisal Committee Doctor Kenrick Williams that it is not recommending that the Department of Environment issues the green light for the Port of Belize expansion project.  That decision is said to have been scientifically supported by experts on the committee.  That project was to include a berthing facility for larger ships that cruise lines have been clamouring for.  News Five has been reliably informed that construction activities for the cruise port at Stakebank have been stalled. So will Belize be able to make the 2024 deadline? C.E.O. in the Ministry of Tourism, Nicole Solano says that there is concern for the cruise tourism plan.

“From our perspective in the tourism industry, it is very important for us to have a cruise port where there is a berthing facility where the cruise lines can actually dock and the passengers can disembark. Currently, as you know, they dock in port and they actually have to be tendered so we know from the cruise industry that this is important. From our perspective, it isn’t a matter to say which port; we need to make sure that we can have a port so that the cruise tourism industry can continue into the future. It’s very important that at the end of the day, there is a port facility with berthing facilities so that these ships can dock. So it is really going to be a situation now where we have to see which of the ports are going to be able to provide that and open and make themselves available for that service.”
