Sacred Heart Junior College Assists with Hurricane Relief

It has been a month since Hurricane Lisa ravaged the Belize District and, despite an outpouring of humanitarian assistance in the wake of that natural disaster, efforts are still being made to assist those who were impacted by the storm.  Today, students from Sacred Heart Junior College in San Ignacio traveled to Belize City where they visited neighborhoods that were affected by Lisa.  When we caught up with them on Banak Street, they were handing out food hampers to residents in that neighborhood.

“We saw the huge effect that Belize had so we decided to do a little fundraiser. We did a barbeque and out of that money we decided to buy things to share to the community in Belize.”

“You came here this morning and I’m certain you weren’t expecting what you’ve seen here in the Banak Street Area.”

Emily Gonzalez

“No, I was very surprised. I’ve seen a lot of places. Just as I came in Belize I saw the huge effect it had in Belize, the hurricane had.

Isani Cayetano

“How does this kind of an initiative make you feel as a student being able to give back in some humble way?”

Emily Gonzalez

“That people still have good hearts and that there are people out there that need it and even people that like Running W and Crion Chicken decided to provide to help the country”

Isani Cayetano

“Is there any other location that you guys are planning to visit while you’re here in Belize City?”

Emily Gonzalez

“We are not sure yet, but hopefully we can reach out to other places.”

Isani Cayetano

“Finally, is there anything else you want to mention that I may be overlooking?”

Emily Gonzalez

“That people always see what’s in front of them and we should focus more on our surroundings because there are a lot of people who are in need so we as people who have everything we should help the ones who don’t have.”
