Facebook Spat Between Faber and U.D.P. Stalwarts Over Saldivar Designation
The designation of former Minister of National Security John Saldivar by the U.S. Department of State, for his purported involvement in bribery and other acts of corruption while serving as a member of the Barrow administration, has plunged the United Democratic Party further into chaos. In the wake of Tuesday’s bombshell revelation, the three-time Belmopan area representative, who was soundly defeated at the polls in the last general elections, attempted to reject the assertions made against him. While he has categorically denied any involvement in corruption while in office, the latest round of allegations against Saldivar continues to drive a wedge between the already fractured opposition. Earlier today, former U.D.P. party leader Patrick Faber took to social media where he fired off a thinly-veiled Facebook post taking aim squarely at Saldivar and Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow. In the post, he suggested that Saldivar should explain how he was able to get the fifty thousand U.S. dollars that was delivered to him in two tranches into Belize. The message elicited a response from former area representative Edmond “Clear the Land” Castro which triggered an online exchange between Faber and several others, including Corozal Southeast Caretaker Tony Herrera. The designation of John Saldivar, who has been working closely with Party Leader Shyne Barrow, is yet another black eye being dealt to the battered United Democratic Party. As we reported on Tuesday, Barrow has issued a statement in which he reiterated that while the U.D.P. has zero tolerance for corruption, Saldivar is innocent until proven guilty.
