P.C.C. on Tight Deadline to Complete Consultations

John Briceño

The People’s Constitutional Commission has eighteen months to fulfill its obligations, before making its submissions to the Prime Minister. But, is eighteen months enough time for the P.C.C. to carry out the extensive consultations that are required for such a process? We also asked the Prime Minister if the entire process will be limited to those eighteen months. Here is what he had to say.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“I don’t think we could talk about if there is going to be additional time or not. I mean obviously, if there is a good reason for more additional time we will but we need to set a timeline or else we’re going to be talking forever and then nothing is going to happen. We need to ensure that there is a timeline where we can have extensive discussions and consultations and then some time to be able to put together the thoughts and ideas of the people. Now it doesn’t mean that what everybody says is going to be fit into a constitution you take the ideas and the general feelings of the populace and you set it up within the framework of a constitution for them for it to be able to be presented to the people for adoption or not.”
