In his remarks, Francis Fonseca, the Minister or Education, Culture, Science, and Technology, encouraged Belizeans to become familiarized with the Constitution of Belize and to play an active role in the reform process. He called on high school and tertiary level students to become educated on the role of the constitution in Belize’s future development.
Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
“We have an opportunity to move from social media activism, and arm chair criticism to real participation in constitutional reform thereby determining how we are governed. Today I want to particularly encourage and challenge our university and junior college and high school students to organize, educate and mobilize themselves for full participation in this process. Let us educate ourselves about the People’s Constitution Commission Act of 2022, what is the composition, role and purpose of the commission. Let us educate ourselves about the Belize Constitution, how does it work, what governance structures does it create, what are our fundamental rights and freedoms, what powers are enshrined therein, what limitations exists. Let us look at the constitution and governance structures of other countries, would these, can these work better for Belize.”
