Millers Open to Individual Agreements with Sugarcane Farmers

And, the conversation regarding the signing of individual agreements between farmers and the millers came up once again in Thursday’s interview. A.S.R./B.S.I says it remains open to signing individual contracts with any sugarcane farmer who intends on doing so, because the mill will be unable to accept sugar cane from farmers without a signed agreement.

Mac MacLachlan, V.P. International Relations, ASR/BSI

“It is really not up to us to push for anything. People have a legitimate option to contract in whatever way they wish. And, the bottom line for us is we want to receive eth cane and I am sure the cane farmers want to deliver to us. It has to be done in a fair and appropriate way based on commercial terms agreed by both parties. It is as simple as that.”

Paul Lopez

“So then you are open to farmers coming to you and signing such agreements?”

“We always have been. It is not up to us. The law allows people to contract however they wish. We have been criticized of going out and trying to break up associations. That is not it at all. We want to receive the cane from every cane farmer that is there. It has to be based on an agreed commercial agreement.”
